"It’s such a barrier for so many of our students to start the year out right. And having a backpack full of new supplies really puts all kids on an equal playing field on day one."
For more than 25 years, United Way of Southeast Minnesota has helped local students start the school year with the tools they need to succeed. When United Way took over the Running Start for School program from Community Education in 1998, it served around 500 families. In 2025, that number has grown to 3,638 students across Olmsted, Dodge, Fillmore, and Winona Counties. Each student receives a free backpack filled with school supplies.
One of the people who helped shape the early days of Running Start at United Way was Keri Norman, now Principal Gifts Officer at Mayo Clinic and formerly United Way’s Director of Marketing and Special Events. Keri helped launch the first community-wide supply drives at United Way, organizing drop-off bins and coordinating volunteers to sort donations. Families would bring in their school supply lists and “shop” for what they needed from the donated items.
“It’s such a barrier for so many of our students to start the year out right. And having a backpack full of new supplies really puts all kids on an equal playing field on day one,” Keri said.
As the needs of the community have grown and changed, so has Running Start. In 2020, during the pandemic, the program moved from physical drives to an online model. Now, donors purchase backpacks and supplies through an online registry, and volunteers help pack the bags once the items arrive at United Way’s office. This makes sure every student receives consistent, high-quality supplies that fit their grade level – from pre-K through high school.
But Running Start isn’t just about notebooks and pencils anymore.
United Way expanded the program to include information on healthcare, dental services, and access to the 211 resource and referral line. These resources are available to students and their families, supporting their overall well-being outside of the classroom.
United Way works with schools and community partners to figure out how many backpacks are needed in their area. This partner-led approach ensures every kid who needs a backpack can receive one – no applications or proof of need required. Any student can receive a Running Start backpack and supplies by reaching out to their school or a community organization.
Keri reflected on the importance of programs like this, then and now: “You never know when it's going to be you that needs that service, or your family or friends. You don't know who the people are around you using the services of the United Way...it's that safety net, to be able to provide for people when they do find themselves in need.”
As we enter the 27th year of Running Start for School, one thing remains the same: the power of community to help students succeed. Just $8 provides a backpack filled with supplies – and the message that every student matters. Join us in continuing this legacy of care and opportunity for Southeast Minnesota students.
